What Duolingo does well

Duolingo reported 58.7 million 7 daily active users and 12.7 million 7 paid subscribers in Q2 2026 7.

Streaks and a free-to-start, paid-to-continue plan. A Streak Revival event let learners restore their longest streak 7.

What changes for coding

Coding beginners. Mimo's homepage claims 35M 3+ learners and 750K 3+ 5 3-star reviews (self-reported).

They need bite-sized lessons they can finish on a phone, plus a daily streak so the habit sticks 5.

What's the crossover

From DuolingoFrom Duolingo: a daily streak and a short lesson you can finish in a sitting 7.

From codingFrom the market: write real code in small steps, not a video you only watch 5.

A streak-based daily coding habit. Mimo, SoloLearn, Encode and Edabit already do this, so a general beginner app starts behind. The remaining wedge is a single language or job the current apps treat as a side path.

Demand check

Publish a signup page for the narrow angle, such as daily SQL for analysts, and share it in the learner groups you can reach. Count signups against visits. If almost nobody signs up, the live apps already cover the need.

Build plan

  • Start: pick a language and write a starter set of problems the learner can run in the browser.
  • Next: ship a web app with a daily lesson, an editor, a streak counter, and a short quiz that checks the output.
  • Then: add a reminder email and a simple paid plan behind a free opening unit.
  • After that: invite the signup list and fix the lesson where people drop off.

Copy the build prompt

Build a small web app for learning to code through a daily habit. Each lesson shows a short prompt and an editor where the learner writes real code, then checks the output. Track a daily streak, show progress per unit, and send a reminder email when the learner has not practiced today. Keep the opening unit free and put later units behind a paid plan. Store users, lessons, streaks and plan status in a database. Use plain, accessible HTML.

Risks and unknowns

  • Mimo, SoloLearn, Encode and Edabit already sell bite-sized coding habits, so a general beginner app starts behind 3.
  • A course that never lets people run code will lose them to apps that do 5.
